The Nursing and Midwifery Council
of Zambia is a regulator of the education, training and practice of nurses and
midwives and not an employer of the same. The mandate of the council ends at
regulating the education, training and practice of nurses and midwives.
The council has four
categories of registers that it uses to register nurses namely Full Register, Provisional Register and Specialist Register.
- Full registration is given to a nurse or midwife with a qualification obtained from a higher education institution.
- Provisional registration is given to a nurse or midwife with a qualification obtained outside Zambia. Provisional registration is valid for two years subject to renewal for a further two years if an application for full registration is rejected after the initial two-year period. A nurse or midwife with provisional registration can only practice under supervision of a nurse- in- charge or midwife- in- charge.
- While specialist registration is given to a nurse or midwife who has attained Master’s Degree qualifications and above.
The functions of NMCZ are:
- Register
and regulate nurses and midwives
- Issue
practicing certificates to eligible nurses and midwives
- Set and
enforce professional standards of nursing and midwifery education, training and
practice
- Approve
in consultation with the Higher Education Authority and the Zambia
Qualifications Authority, training programmes for nurses and midwives and the
qualifications obtained

competence examinations and award prescribed qualifications in respect of
particular levels of examination.

cases of professional misconduct
- Ensure
adherence to the scope of practice and conditions that promote patient safety
and public confidence in the nursing and midwifery profession.
